I’ve just noticed a previously unnoticed item in my Mac OS X Services menu. It reads Search with Google. It means you can search Google from any application by selecting a word or phrase and choosing Search with Google from the Services menu. This is basically a good thing. The trouble is: Safari is used to display the search results. In my case Safari isn’t my default browser, so I don’t necessarily want or expect my results to open in Safari. How did this item get there? Did Safari register this service? If so, should Camino or OmniWeb also add a Search Google using Camino, or Search Google using OmniWeb? Why not just use the default browser?

Tim,
Seems that you have Gust’s safari service installed. I found it at Apple.

‘Four’, thanks for posting your comment. I haven’t got the Gust Safari Service installed (i’ve checked /System/Library/Services/, /Library/Services/, and ~/Library/Services/ and it isn’t there!) Plus, my menu item reads ‘Search with Google’, the one in the screenshot reads ‘Search Google’, and it’s got a different key command. So i’m still a bit baffled as to how it got there!

Use the Services Manager PrefPane to see who’s providing a service (Safari in this case):

What’s annoying is that it used to be “Open URL in Safari” but they changed that to “Open URL” and put it in another application.
Apple really needs to replace all these ad hoc ways of tweaking input with a real input manager apps can register with and we all can change.

Cheers Peter. Mystery solved.

‘Tis a pity these are bound to applications, yes. Do not like the way Safari handles them anyway.
I found this - it works independent of the installed browser. Has something like 100 Google searches, Vivismo - just look at it!
